SAGA is a Canadian rock band formed in 1977 in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. Founded by bassist Jim Crichton and vocalist/keyboardist Michael Sadler, along with Ian Crichton, Steve Negus and Peter Rochon, the group has delivered a signature blend of melodic progressive rock, intricate synth work, and sharp guitar riffs across more than four decades. The current core lineup in 2026 features Michael Sadler on lead vocals and keyboards, Ian Crichton on guitar, Jim Gilmour on keyboards, primary drummer Mike Thorne with additional tour support by fellow Canadians Brad Park on drums and bass player Mike Borkosky.
Beloved by their fiercely loyal fans spread throughout Canada, the US, Germany, Scandinavia and around the world, they are considered a rather poorly kept secret. Walking the line between "never heard of them" and "been following them since I was a kid", they enjoy that rare freedom of being niche but also popular.
Listeners digging into their history usually start with their self-titled debut released on April 8, 1978, followed by Images at Twilight (1979) and Silent Knight (1980). Their widely received breakthrough came with Worlds Apart (1981), a Gold-certified release in the US that produced radio and MTV favorites "On the Loose" (Billboard Hot 100 #26, strong Canadian and European chart action) and "Wind Him Up."
That momentum earned the band the 1982 Juno Award for Most Promising Group of the Year. Subsequent albums such as Heads or Tales (1983) kept the hits coming with tracks like "The Flyer," while the band maintained a steady release schedule—with 22 studio albums in total, plus various live releases and compilations.
Along the way they created "The Chapters," a long-form conceptual sci-fi song cycle that unfolded across multiple records. Saga has sold more than ten million albums worldwide, collected gold and platinum certifications, and toured extensively, particularly in Europe and Germany, where their music has remained a consistent presence on charts and stages.
You can find their extensive catalog—including remastered reissues and recent releases—via earMUSIC and on all major partner streaming platforms.
The band's passionate community remains active and welcoming online. The Official SAGA Facebook Group (a public group with nearly 20 thousand members) serves as a vibrant hub for fans old and new to share music, concert memories, photos, and discussions. It's often where many listeners discover or rediscover the band's deep and timeless catalog.
With consistent creativity, key chart successes, a Juno win, and a loyal global following built over nearly 50 years, SAGA continues to make music on their own terms—solid, unflashy, and quietly impressive.
